Red Wolf District Roundtable

Roundtable is a district monthly meeting to help unit leaders plan and carry out their own program.  Typically, it is held the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm. The meeting is held at the Jersey Village Civic Center (16327 Lakeview Dr, Jersey Village, TX 77040). 

Roundtable is a form of supplemental training for volunteers. The objective of roundtable is to give leaders program ideas, information on events and training opportunities, and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, informed, and able to provide a stronger program for their Scouts. 

Red Wolf District Committee Meetings

District committee meetings are typically held the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 pm at the Richard & Meg Weekley Community Center (8440 Greenhouse Rd, Cypress, TX 77433).

Consisting of chartered organization representatives (CORs) and elected district committee members, the district committee coordinates the functions of the district. The purpose of the district is to work through chartered organizations and community groups to organize and support successful units. The end result of effective district support is more and more youth members receiving a better and better program. All districts are responsible for carrying out four standard functions:

1) The membership function strives for growth through the organization of new Scouting units and through new members and adult volunteers joining existing units and working to retain current members.
2) The finance function sees that the district provides its share of funds to the total council operating budget.
3) The program function concentrates on helping Scouting units with camp promotion; special activities including community service; training adult volunteers; and youth advancement and recognition.
4) The unit service function provides direct coaching and consultation by district volunteers for unit adults to help ensure the success of every Scouting unit.

Red Wolf District Commissioner Meetings

Commissioner meetings are typically held every month at 7:00 pm on the Wednesday before roundtable.  Currently, district commissioner meetings are held in person. Invitations are sent each month to the commissioner team members.

The commissioners review specific unit needs, discuss ways to support unit growth in the Journey to Excellence criteria, examine ways to promote events and provide resources to units, support on-time charter renewal, and evaluate ways to help the units and district maintain the standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The unit service function is carried out by the district commissioner staff.

Chapter Meetings

Last Thursday of the month  |  7:00 pm  |  West Harris County Municipal Club House

OA chapter meetings are typically held on the last Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at West Harris County Municipal Club House (9431 Rio Grande Dr, Houston, TX 77064). Chapter meetings provide an opportunity for the youth to develop a plan to support units in the district, promote upcoming events, participate in ceremony team preparation and regalia building, learn leadership skills and have fun.

About the Red Wolf

The Red Wolf District name was chosen to help educate people about the plight of the red wolf.

Red wolves are on the brink of extinction, but a breeding programs are working to help them make a comeback. Fewer than twenty red wolves remain in the wild.  Scouting promotes ecology, conservation, and resource management. Some history and facts about the red wolf:

• When first discovered the red wolf was called the red Texan wolf.
• Smaller than a grey wolf and larger than a coyote.
• The red wolf is currently on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Critical Endangered Species list.
• At one time, the red wolf could be seen in eastern and central Texas, as its range was across the southeastern and south-central United States.
• The red wolf was almost driven to extinction by aggressive eradication programs and habitat destruction through the mid-1900s.
• In the late 1960s, only a small number of red wolves were around in east Texas and western Louisiana.
• 14 red wolves were captured and placed into a captive breeding program. This program has been successful; however, in 1980, the red wolf was declared extinct in the wild.
• An effort to repopulate the red wolf began in 1987 and were released in the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge and the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
• Of the 63 wolves released between 1987 and 1994, the population rose to between 100 and 120 by 2012.
• Success has diminished over the last few years due to poor regulation enforcement and the wild population has dwindled to 14 by 2019.
