The Cub Scout Fishing Derby is an opportunity for Cub Scouts kindergarten through 5th grade and catch the big one! This is a great event for seasoned anglers or Scouts who haven't ever cast a line.

  • Learn to Fish: Experienced volunteers will teach Scouts about everything from baiting a hook to reeling in a whopper!
  • Friendly Competition: Scouts can show off their skills to see who catches the longest fish, the smallest fish, and the most fish (catch and release).
  • Fun for All: It's not just about fishing; it's about making memories!

This is a great opportunity to experience the outdoors and make new friends. Youth interested in joining Scouts are invited to attend to get a sneak peek at Cub Scouts.

What to Bring

  • BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (Part A & B for any Scouting event) for every person attending
  • Barless hooks
  • Closed-toed shoes
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather
  • Water bottle or cup
  • Hand cleaner (e.g., hand sanitizer, baby wipes, paper towels)
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Field uniform (Scout uniform) or activity uniform (any Scout t-shirt) for registered Scouts encouraged
  • Optional: Fishing pole (a fishing license is not required), tackle and tackle box
  • Optional: chair, water, snacks, canopy for shade

Categories

Awards will be given to Cub Scouts for :

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd place for longest fish caught by rank
  • 1st place for smallest fish caught by rank
  • 1st place for most fish caught overall.

Rules

  1. All participants must be registered or considering registration in Cub Scouts.
  2. All Cub Scouts must have a parent or guardian with them at all times. No exceptions!  
  3. All fish must be caught with a rod only. Only one rod or pole per Scout. Scouts can bring their own rod, pole, tackle, and net or use camp provided equipment. 
  4. All fish must be caught during the fishing tournament time.
  5. The Scouts must hook, bring in and land the fish. Each fish must be recorded and measured by an authorized judge in order to qualify. Only authorized judges can accept and record fish. On all matters, the decisions of the judges shall be final.
  6. All fish will qualify. This is a catch and release tournament.
  7. All fish will be measured according to the Texas Parks & Wildlife measurement tips.
  8. When a tie exists between qualified potential winners (smallest & longest categories) the one with the most fish caught will be the lead winner. When a tie exists in the Most category, the person with the longest overall inches of fish will be the lead winner.
  9. All Scouts will be entered into a drawing for additional tournament prizes. Scouts are eligible to win only one prize. The Scout must be present at the award ceremony to accept the prize.
  10. At check-in, each Scout will be provided with bait; however, you may bring your own bait (live or artificial).
  11. Parents/guardians may help young Cub Scouts, if absolutely necessary, but the Cub Scouts should do most of the work. This is a youth event.

Scouting Safely

Safety is Your Responsibility posterThe BSA's Commitment to Safety is ongoing and we want you to know that the safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees cannot be compromised. The Boy Scouts of America puts the utmost importance on the safe and healthy environments for its youth membership. The Sam Houston Area Council takes great strides to ensure the safety of its youth as well as the adult volunteer leadership that interacts with them. 

BSA Guide to Safe Scouting policies must be followed. All participants must follow youth protection guidelines at all Scouting events. Highlights include:

  • Two-deep leadership on all outings is required.  
  • One-on-one contact between adults and youth members is prohibited. 
  • The buddy system should be used at all times. 
  • Discipline must be constructive.

Health and safety must be integrated into everything we do, to the point that no injuries are acceptable beyond those that are readily treatable by Scout-rendered first aid. As an aid in the continuing effort to protect participants in Scout activities, the BSA National Health and Safety Committee and the Council Services Division of the BSA National Council has developed the SAFE Checklist of BSA safety procedures for physical activity. These points, which embody good judgment and common sense, are applicable to all activities.
