Skyline District

The Skyline District serves downtown, Heights, 290 and Tidwell to 45 North and 59 North.  Our activities include Cub-o-Ree, First Aid Meet, District Dinner, Camp-o-Ree, and Twilight Camp. Come out and meet the district every first Thursday of the month except for July at 7:00 pm, at the Cockrell Service Center.  Also, we invite you to be a part of our district committee to help provide the best program for our youth which meets the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Cockrell Service Center.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)

March 14, 2015

BALOO is designed as an introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor program for those leaders who are interested in adding a camping component to their pack activities. BSA's Cub Scout level camping policies will be taught along with the necessary tools to help units carry out a successful camping experience. Completion of this course is mandatory for at least one adult on a pack overnighter. BALOO will be held at 4918 Cochran St, 77099 from 8:30 – 5:30 (ish).  Bring: paper, pen, notebook and $10 cash or check (payable to SHAC) for registration and Webelos Handbook (optional).

Scout Fair

Saturday, April 18, 2015
10:00am - 3:00pm at NRG Arena

At Scout Fair, Scouts of all ages converge to showcase their Scouting skills. Meet leaders and Scouts from your neighborhood. Sample the amazing dutch oven creations and other delicacies in the outdoor cooking area. Visit the midway with over 90 experts representing merit badges. Enjoy live entertainment on the center stage. Watch demonstrations, interact with participating booths from our community partners...pick up free offers. Scouts and the entire family will enjoy visiting hundreds of booths with fun activities and crafts, learning Scout skills, meeting new friends and tasting the delicious outdoor cooking. Bring comfortable shoes and your camera. Open to the public. Admission is free (parking is $10).

Scout Fair Coupon Books are a brilliant way for units to raise money and prepare Scouts to earn their own way! The Scout Fair Coupon Book offers great savings for the buyer, while Scouts earn commissions for every $10 Coupon Book purchased. Buyers support the Scouting program while receiving over $600 in valuable savings from partners such as Kroger, Sonic, Bass Pro, Goodyear and more. All units receive a 30% base commission for each $10 Scout Fair Coupon Book sold, for funds turned in on or before April 18, 2015. Participate at Scout Fair, as either a service unit or booth participant, and earn an additional 10% commission. Service units must have a minimum of 50% of their registered youth participating to receive the additional commission. Units can also take advantage of early bird turn-in dates offering 5%, 3% and 1% additional bonus commissions. In addition, your Scouts will qualify for prizes once they sell 15 Coupon Books. Scout Fair Booths: Every unit is encouraged to sponsor a booth at the fair. This is your opportunity to show our community what Scouting is all about, and to share your Scouting skills with fellow Scouts and Scout Leaders. In the past, booths have included craft stations (Cub Scouts), rope making (Boy Scouts), orienteering (Venturing), and law enforcement (Exploring). Keep it simple and fun. By involving all the Scouts and parents in your unit, booth preparation and set-up, manning and take down can be shared to keep it simple and make it fun. Each unit hosting a booth will receive a ribbon. For more information regarding booth rules and regulations, please refer to the Scout Fair booth safety guidelines. Service Units: Units can participate in Scout Fair as a service unit. Service units should check-in at the council service unit booth upon arrival. Scouts are needed in many ways to help at Scout Fair, whether helping to hand out flyers, unload boxes, or set up areas. Your unit will receive a notice of where your help is needed one week before the fair. Service units must have a minimum of 50% of their registered youth participating to receive the additional commission.

Skyline District Twilight Camp

June 15-18, 2015 from 5:40 pm to 8:40 pm 
St. Pius X High School (811 W. Donovan Street Houston, TX 77091)

Twilight Camp is a council camp hosted by districts for Scouts entering 1st – 5th grade. Scouts earn rank advancements, learn new skills, play sports and games, make crafts, shoot BB guns and archery, but most of all have fun. Scouts can attend any district’s camp that best suits their schedule. Participants receive a t-shirt and patch.

At camp, Cub Scouts will salute those heroes who help keep us safe and secure each and every day. Can only adults be heroes? Heroes are often ordinary kids who did something out of the ordinary! Sometimes a hero is obvious, the policeman who risks his life to protect us from violence or the fireman who pulls people out of burning buildings. Some people around us seem like regular people, but they are heroes because they used to be soldiers in the military and served our country to keep us free. Heroes are all around us. You never know when or where emergencies will arise. Scouting teaches us how to handle these situations. We don’t expect to get hurt, and don’t expect to need first aid, but we are prepared just in case. Do Your Best! One person can make a difference. One person who helps can change someone’s world. Maybe one day the hero will be you or your Cub Scout.

SHAC Corps is an opportunity for troops and crews to give back to camp in the form of a day of service. The Order of the Arrow is leading this opportunity, but this service project is open to all Boy Scouts and Venturers. All you have to bring is your personal camp gear. Camp is providing the food and a special shoulder patch, that will only be available to those who provide service. Service projects will include creating new campsites and clearing new programs areas for activities, such as zip lines. Letters will be given to youth who need school service hours. Units or individual Arrowmen may register.

Like Adventure? Are you taking youth on high adventure activities? Is everyone qualified to plan and execute the adventure? Powder Horn is an action-packed, hands-on, six-day training course on high adventure resources to help Scouts and Scouters learn how to implement high adventure activities into their troop, crew or ship.​ Powder Horn is designed to introduce and expose Venturing, Sea Scout and Boy Scout adult and youth leaders to the activities and resources necessary to manage a successful outdoor or high adventure unit-level program.This course is a fun introduction to skills. Powder Horn does not train you to be an expert, or even to be self-sufficient in any aspect of outdoor skills. Units will most likely still need to find knowledgeable, trained, and certified individuals to provide a safe and exciting outdoor high adventure program.

Spring is here Scouters, and you know what that means? It’s time to reach out to all of those potential Scouts and give them the opportunity to join Scouting.

Did you know that 46% of families have never been asked to join Scouting? Based on a recent national survey you can see how Scouts and families find out about an join a Scouting. 68% are asked by a Scout, friend, volunteer or the charter organization to join. What can we do during spring recruiting to ask the 46% who have never been asked to join?  

Packs are encouraged to hold spring recruiting events. For Cub Scouts, there is no better time to personally invite your son's friends to a meeting! District and pack campouts are coming up as well as day campresident camp and summertime pack activities! And don’t forget about all of those potential Scouts, the kindergarteners who can join on June 1! March and April is the time to get talkin’ with the schools and ask if you can invite kids to join Scouting! Sometimes we think we can only recruit in the fall, but spring is a great time to get new Scouts and their families involved early.

But what about the Boy Scouts and Venturers? March is the perfect month to have an open house to invite friends and other potential Scouts for the opportunity to see what your troop, crew and ship is made of. Check out some of the cool resources:

The Silver Beaver Award is the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow on a volunteer. In 1931, BSA President Mortimer L. Schiff recommended to the national board that an award be devised for recognition of distinguished service to youth in the area of a local council, and the concept of the Silver Beaver Award recognition was established. The Silver Beaver awards will be presented at the Council Recognition Reception on October 27, 2015.
