Backpacking Training

Get Ready for Backpacking

The high adventure committees offers two courses to help troops, teams, and crews prepare for backpacking adventures, including Philmont. Both courses are held at El Rancho Cima.

Backpacking 101

Backpacking 101 is a weekend training course designed for first-time backpackers. This course provides an introduction to backpacking skills and techniques. Participants will be given an opportunity to work with equipment brought by the training staff. Minimal hiking skills are required. Participants must be able to carry their day packs from one training location to another. Training will include a "no cook" lunch. Units should plan on cooking their other meals using backpack stoves or propane stoves. Units should bring a GPS. Space is limited, so sign up today!

Hike & Learn + Mini-Philmont

Hike & Learn + Mini-Philmont is an activity that requires units to break camp on Saturday morning and hike to different training locations around El Rancho Cima while carrying their packs. Units must be fully self-sufficient and have the ability to cook their own meals on the trail using backpack stoves or propane stoves. Units should bring a GPS.  Space is limited, so sign up today!
