Places To Go

Click here for an 18-page list of field trips for Cub Scouts recommended by fellow Scouters.  Be sure to file a local tour permit as required, as well as securing a permission slip from parents or guardians. NOTE:  Electronic tour permit, accessed via www.myscouting.org, is the preferred method of submission.Fun

The Houston Wilderness Passport is an educational program that encourages families to explore the outdoors together.  The passport -- available in both English and Spanish -- can be downloaded from the web site of Houston Wilderness (www.houstonwilderness.org). Also available are maps, parent guides, teacher guides, and a calendar of special outdoor activities for children.

Akela's Trail  - November 6, 2010 - Adult only training event

The 2010 theme for this annual adult training event (formerly known as Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow), "Follow Akela's Trail into the Next Century," will help Cub Scout leaders and parents add fun and adventure to the Cub Scout program.  Attendees planned their own unique schedule from over 50 sessions that help provide a more exciting program to the boys in their den or pack.

American Indian Weekend

Sponsored by the Order of the Arrow, the weekend is filled with dance styles, crafts, and ceremonial sessions.  See the Colonneh Lodge web site for more information (www.colonneh.org).

Armand Bayou Nature Center

Armand Bayou Nature Center offers workshops to help Cub Scouts obtain a wide variety of achievements, belt loops, and pins. Check their web site for details (www.abnc.org/education/scouting.php).

Children's Musuem of Houston

Explore fourteen galleries of non-stop, hands-on learning -- and earn belt loops, pins, and Cub Scout advancement requirements at the same time!  Check their web site for details (www.cmhouston.org).

Downtown Aquarium

Special workshops are planned during which Cub Scouts can earn the Science belt loop and pin.  Other educational programs for families or groups are scheduled throughout the year. Eco-Doins - Camp Strake                  

Monthly conservation program held at Cub World Pavilion at Camp Strake at 1 PM.

Fort Bend Museum - Richmond, Texas

God and Country Scout Retreat - Annually in November

The Episcopal Scout Association sponsors a God and Country Retreat for youth ages 7 through 20 (Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts) to work on their religious awards. Classes will include God & Me, God & Family, God & Church, and God & Life. The program is designed for all Protestant faiths.

Greater Houston Stamp Show - September each year - Humble Civic Center

Sponsored by the Houston Philatelic Society, the show will help children and families who want to collect stamps, learn about our nation's history, or start a new hobby in stamp collecting.  Free stamps are available for children.  For more information, see www.houstonstampclub.org.

The Health Museum: McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science

The museum conducts periodic workshops for Cub Scouts.  For more information, visit the museum web site (www.mhms.org).  Private workshops may be scheduled for Scout groups of ten or more.

The Heritage Society - Sam Houston Park

Special tours are available for Scout groups, including one focusing on the Texas Badge.  Call ahead to make arrangements.  (www.heritagesociety.org/s.htm)

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center

Houston Gem & Mineral Society - November 12-14, 2010

The Gem, Jewelry, Mineral, & Fossil Show, sponsored by the Houston Gem & Mineral Society, seeks to raise awareness of Earth Science Education activities in the Houston area.  Traditionally held in late September, there are lots of hands-on activities for children, including workshops for the Geologist activity badge.  For more information, see the HGMS web site (www.hgms.org).
 

Houston Museum of Natural Science

The Museum offers opportunities throughout the year for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts to complete requirements in various subjects. For registration, visit the web site of the Houston Museum of Natural Science (www.hmns.org/education/scouts.asp).

Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo offers special activities throughout the year for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts. Night Prowl is an after-hours program to explore the Zoo.  Wild Winks is an overnight program.  Workshops are also held periodically for completion of the Webelos Naturalist activity badge. Jamboree-on-the-Air - October 16-17, 2010

McNair Cub Adventure Camp - Bovay Scout Ranch / Navasota, Texas

Family Camping Weekends

Packs, dens, or individual families can make reservations at this fee-base program camp near Navasota.  Activities include archery, pellet guns, BMX bikes, horizontal climbing wall, fishing, swimming, nature, astronomy, hiking, and much more!  Four meals served in an air-conditioned dining hall are included in your registration fee.  NOTE:  This is the only approved site at which Tiger Cub, Wolf, or Bear Cub Scout dens may camp as a den unit rather than as part of a pack overnighter campout.  See Sam Houston Area Council Cub Scout Camping Guidelines for more information.

Pack Outing Weekends

Packs may use the campsites at a minimal fee to provide their own program and meals.  Program areas are not open and staffed; meals are not served in the dining hall.  A BALOO-trained leader is required to be in attendance at a pack outing weekend.
 

Moody Gardens - Galveston, Texas

Workshops can be arrranged for Wolves (Elective 13, Birds), Bears (Achievement 5, Sharing Your World), and Webelos (Naturalist activity badge).  These may also be combined with an overnighter.  See the Moody Gardens web site (www.moodygardens.com) for details.

Northern Branch Office Scout Training Team - American Red Cross training

American Red Cross Basic Aid Training (BAT) is designed for Webelos Scouts to complete the Readyman activity badge. All day workshop at Camp Strake.  See the team's web site for more details (www.scoutcpr.org).

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum - Galveston

Offers periodic workshops for completion of the Cub Scout Academics Geology belt loop and pin. For more information, visit the museum web site (www.oceanstaroec.com/education/scouts.htm).  An educational program is conducted the second Saturday of every month and is free for children 18 or younger.  Scout-specific workshops are held on the third weekend of the month.

Project Wild Training - For adult leaders

Project WILD is a wildlife-focused conservation education program.  It is used by educators nationwide.  The activites in the instructional manual are easily adaptable to Cub Scouts activities.

Puff-Up - Catholic Scouting Retreat - Held annually in October

Conducted by the Galveston-Houston Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting, Puff-Up is a day long set of activities for Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts and their families to promote a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith.  Family camping is available on Friday and Saturday night.  Registration information is available at accs-agh.org.

River, Lakes, Bays'N Bayous Trash Bash - March 26, 2011

Annual conservation education and trash collection event. Occurs simultaneously at several locations in the Houston area, usually in late March. More information may be found at the event's web site (www.trashbash.org).

Many religious organizations choose to recognize Scouting on the Saturday or Sunday prior to BSA's Anniversary on February 8.
