The 2015 Distinguished Family Award was presented to the Frank D. Tsuru Family on September 24, 2015.  The dinner, held at the Hilton-Americas Houston, highlighted the five generational story of the Tsuru family in America.

Frank and Stephanie Tsuru, along with their children Seth, who is married to Katie, Kylee and Bailey, moved to Houston in 2007. In that short time, they have invested time and energy to help continue to make Houston a wonderful place to live and work.  The family is involved and provides leadership too many worthwhile organizations including Yellowstone Academy, The Star of Hope Mission, and Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.  Along with their children they provide financial support and participate in mission work with Family Legacy Missions, an orphan ministry caring for AIDS orphans in Zambia, Africa.  They give as much time as they can because they have found that simply supporting an organization with financial help, although critically important, is not nearly as meaningful as giving of their time.  When not volunteering, Frank is the President and CEO of M3 Midstream.

Distinguished Family Award - Recognizing Extraordinary Families

Award Description:  Established by the Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts of America in 1995, the Distinguished Family Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership and participating citizenship of families.  Prior to 2005, the award recognized a distinguished citizen.  Honoring members and leaders of distinguished families delivers a message to our youth that character counts. The contributions of distinguished families to their communities serve as guideposts to inspire our youth and others to lead, to accept responsibility, and to care about principles and causes beyond self-interest.

For 100 years, the Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America has provided young people with character-development programs based on values found in the Scout Oath: duty to God, duty to country, duty to others, and duty to self.

The proceeds of this event help provide Scouting to nearly 50,000 youth in the greater Houston area.  Over 10,000 of these youth members live in at-risk communities and are economically challenged.

Purpose:  To honor an outstanding family, provide revenue to support the programs of the Sam Houston Area Council and to market Scouting to the community.

Venue and Timeframe:  The date and venue of the event is coordinated with the family being honored.  The preferred time frame for this event is March 1st – May 15th of each year.

Selection of Honorees:  Past honorees of this award assist in the selection of future honorees.
