Celebrating Richard A. Eichler

Each year, the Distinguished Citizen/Family Award Dinner affords an opportunity to honor individuals or families who have made a distinct difference in the fabric of the Southeast Texas. The 2017 Distinguished Citizen Award is being presented to Richard A. Eichler.

Rich Eichler joined Hart Energy, a media, research and data provider to the energy global industry, in 1985. His various leadership roles since then include serving as publisher of its flagship franchise, Oil and Gas Investor, as president (after 1999) and as its Chief Executive Officer since 2004.  Today he is vice chairman and CEO, overseeing Hart Energy's portfolio of media platforms, conferences and exhibitions, as well as its research, consulting and data services operations.

As a youth, Rich was a Life Scout.  As an adult, he served as assistant scoutmaster for his son’s troop -- and today his son is one of our Council’s Eagle Scouts.  Rich joined SHAC’s Board of Directors in 2009 and quickly became an influential and visionary leader.  In 2010, he chaired our 16,000-person celebration of Scouting’s 100th anniversary at Minute Maid Park.  Since the tremendous success of that event, Rich has served as chair or co-chair of each annual Distinguished Family/Citizen Award Dinner, the 2014 Council Centennial Gala and 2016 “Eagles among Us” gala.  He is now serving a third term as Council Chairman.

Beyond Scouting, Rich’s community service revolves around veterans, youth and education.  He actively aids military support organizations such the Boot Campaign and Lone Survivor Foundation, both of which assist wounded veterans.  He has worked behind the scenes to benefit the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and to provide funding so veterans with traumatic brain injuries to receive care at the Rocky Mountain Hyperbaric Institute.  Closer to home, he co-chairs the annual Scott A. Macintosh Memorial Golf Tournament, a significant contributor to the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships to the families of veterans wounded or killed in action.

The evening’s keynote speaker is an authentic American hero -- Major Dan “Noonan” Rooney, F-16 fighter pilot with 3 combat tours in Iraq, a PGA Golf Professional -- and founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation.

Proceeds from the Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner helps provide Scouting to approximately 50,000 youth in Southeast Texas. Over 10,000 of these youth members live in at-risk communities and are economically challenged. For over 100 years, the Sam Houston Area Council, Boy Scouts of America has provided young people with character-development programs based on values found in the Scout Oath: duty to God, duty to country, duty to others, and duty to self.
