The 3-month old was restrained in his car seat choking, gasping for air and not able to breathe. Matthew attempted to pat Logan on the back to help him breathe to no avail. Matthew told his mother to pull over, and once the car was safely stopped, Matthew applied the infant Heimlich maneuver on his brother. In a few moments, Logan began to breathe! Matthew’s mother said, “Matthew remained calm and was ready to help in a stressful situation. Logan began breathing again before I could help!” Matthew was taught the infant Heimlich maneuver as part of his Scouting training. Matthew’s mother continued, “I am so grateful for Matthew and his life-saving actions.” For his quick thinking that day, Matthew received the BSA’s Merit Award. Annually, hundreds of Scouts are recognized for saving lives due to training received in the Scouting program. – MATHEW PHILLIPS BOY SCOUT
