SHAC

    Climbing

Welcome to the Sam Houston Area Council Climbing Committee Page. Did you know that SHAC has a Climbing Committee? We have been around since 2000 and have grown from 2 to 12 members and trained over 300 adults. We have helped at Camporees, Summer Camp, OA events and 1000's of unit Climbing events. So if you want to help out in some way, please let us know.

This Committee is dedicated to providing quality training and activities above and beyond the basic camping experiences of the Boy Scouts of America.

Training: We offer several different level of Climbing/Rappelling courses that begin with a Tower course at El Rancho Cima, and finish with a Real Rock course at Enchanged Rock State Natural Area.. The adult courses are offered twice a year, once in the spinrg and once in the fall. Youth equivalent of the above courses are offered too. The committee offers a two-day informative workshp which is designed to train instructors in BSA's "Climb on Safely" and how to effectively supervise climbing/rappelling activities at SHAC climbing towers. Individuals who satisfactorily demonstrate the skills necessary to be an instructor after completing the workship will receive a "Tower Instructor" status. We also offer a beginners real rock couse. This course is where we bring out the cool stuff (Cams, Stoppers, Hexs ...) and go into detail about anchors, anchors and more anchors. You must have completed the Basic course. At the end of the course you will receive a card showing that you have participated and completed the SHAC Topping Out (Climbing) Course. Only at the successful completion of both courses will you then receive a BSA Instructor card.

NEW: Youth Topping Out 2012: SHAC is hosting a Topping Out Instructor training class for youth, targeting SHAC youth, male and female, who have a desire to become BSA trained Climbing/Rappelling Instructors-In-Training. The class consists of a night meeting before the tower class, a two day tower class at El Rancho Cima, followed by another night class before the 2 day Real Rock Class at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, near Fredericksburg, TX. The students should have a desire to advance climbing instructor skills to be applied for unit climbing/rappelling activities or possibly for council summer camp staff work.

There will be a meeting at the Council office from 6:30-9:00 pm either Tuesday or Wednesday prior to both the Tower Course and the Real Rock course.  The exact day will be announced as schedules firm up.
