Nestled in the Piney Woods of East Texas lies 2,175 acres of a great camping experience located 40 miles north of Houston and just south of Conroe in Montgomery County on I-45. Camp Strake was acquired in 1942 and dedicated in March, 1944 honoring George and Susan Strake who paid off the note of the purchase of the land. This property has many sections and is used for multiple purposes. It provides for Cub Scout weekend camping at the Janis and George Fleming Cub World, Boy Scout and Venturing weekend camping activities at Deer Lake and Grand Lake. Training for Scout leaders and outside groups at Hart Kuester Lodge, Seton Training Site and The Conference Center. This is a year-round camp which accommodates all camping seasons. For a $2 person for in-council and $3 person for other council units camp usage fee, campsites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance by calling the Sam Houston Area Council office at 713-756-3303 or toll free at 1-877-272-2267 or email your request to kathy.bozarth@shac.org.

Janis and George Fleming Cub World is the Cub Scout retreat area. Spread out over 100 acres in Camp Strake among stands of tall pine and oak, it is sure to be a boy’s dream of an outdoor adventure come true. There is always something to do at Cub World. With 14 wooded campsites ranging in capacity from 50 to 150 on each, we can accommodate up to approximately 900 in a weekend. Each campsite consists of a 30 x 40 covered pavilion, running water, and a fire ring area for cooking and campfires. There are modern restroom and shower facilities centrally located throughout the camp. The many
activity areas available at Cub World ensure a fun filled weekend chock full of lasting memories.

In addition to the 14 wooded campsites for camping, there are many features of Cub World such as the Program Building where you can hold your Den or Pack Meeting, Pinewood or Regatta Derby. The Sports Field right beside it can accommodate your Softball Game, Relay Races, or any other outdoor games that might require a large field. Don’t forget to take a ride on one of the Huck Finn Rafts just across the way from the Program Building. Be sure to bring your fishing pole to use while you’re waiting for your raft ride!

If that is not enough, head on over to the Stockade or Fort for an old west shoot out with your water pistols or cool off with some water balloons. Not far from there, located just at the waters edge of Brown and Root Lake is the Pirate Ship that you simply must explore. Need a rest? Stop off at the Covered Tee Pees and take a break. Be sure you make time to head over to Ceremony Island for your Pack Meeting in the woods! Also a great area for an Arrow of Light Ceremony.

Grand Lake is the Boy Scout camping and activity area of Camp Strake. The 21 campsites that are divided into three separate wings offer enough room and seclusion to accommodate several units and activities at one time. Click here for online weekend registration access. Be sure you enjoy the beautiful piney woods as you walk down our many hiking trails. Many program areas are also available for your use during your visit with us. Appropriate adult training is required. The Shooting Sports Range can accommodate Rifle and Shotgun Shooting as well as Archery. After you perfect your shooting skills, head over to Deer Lake and practice Canoeing in one of the most scenic areas of the camp. You may prefer to just relax under the Joplin Pavilion next to the lake and take in the beauty of it all. Need more? We also have a COPE Course ! Get ready to work on some of those team building skills ... a great confidence builder along with team work training.

Also located in the Grand Lake area of Camp Strake are several areas to accommodate your next training. Whether it’s an Adult Outdoor Training or a Troop level NYLT, reserve your next training to be in the amazing piney woods of Camp Strake.

Come join us for a fun filled weekend of scouting skills. With so much to do, and so many facilities, this is a great place to hold your next District Camporee or Webelos Woods. JP White Camporee Site is a great place to do just that!

The Conference Center is a wonderful modern Training facility located in a comfortable rustic setting. Free of unnecessary distractions, this is a great place to keep your meeting purpose focused. Very affordable, it is perfect for the budget conscious meeting and retreat planner.

Available for use by Scout Groups and any non-profit organization such as church groups, schools, etc. Facilities are available for all daytime meetings and overnight retreats.

All non-scout groups are required to provide a certificate of insurance and a hold harmless agreement to use the conference center facilities.

The Conference Room building will comfortably seat a single group of 300, or can be divided to handle three groups of 75 each. It is completely furnished with tables and chairs as well as several audio visual aids for your convenience.

The Conference Center groups requesting meal service are served by the camp staff from a modern kitchen and dining room with cafeteria style service. Dietary needs are handled on an individual basis.

Need to have an overnight retreat? Great! We have four dorms and seven cabins available to accommodate up to a total of 92 for overnight housing. All linens are furnished and buildings have air conditioning and heat. You and your personal toiletries are all that you need to bring.
