In every era, and through numerous trends of the past century, Scouting has been steadfast.   Our 1OOth Anniversary provides a unique opportunity to celebrate this heritage and lay the foundation for the next 1OO years.  Keep your calendars open for these exciting events in the Sam Houston Area Council celebrating the 100th year of scouting!   2010 Bookmark

A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference

During our centennial, we honor the enormous impact made by a century of living by the Scout Oath and Law. By showing dedication to five of Scouting’s core values, Scouts, leaders, and Scouting alumni can earn a BSA 100th Anniversary commemorative patch. Those values are: Leadership, Character, Community Service, Achievement, and the Outdoors. As part of this program, the BSA is also partnering with national and international organizations to offer unique 100th Anniversary service projects.     more

Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary Trees

Through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, official BSA 100th Anniversary trees are now being offered.   Planting a 100th Anniversary tree makes a wonderful, meaningful family activity. We encourage all of our Scouting families to consider taking a few moments to plant and nurture a tree in honor of the memories your family has built through Scouting. The tree can serve as your family’s living Scouting legacy for many years to come. Each time you see your tree, you’ll be reminded of the fun experiences your family has shared!

Trees ($20, including shipping and handling) can be ordered at any time, but are only shipped via UPS during proper planting times to ensure the best chances of survival (typically from February – May, and September – December).    The Arbor Day Foundation has designated the following trees are appropriate for Houston zone 9:  Eastern Redbud, White Dogwood, Red Dogwood, Red Sunset Maple, River Birch, Black Tupelo.

For each “Centennial Tree” ordered, one additional tree will be planted in the Flathead National Forest, located in northwest Montana, adjacent to Glacier National Park, in an area newly designated as the BSA Centennial Forest.  Douglas fir, western white pine, western larch, lodge pole pine, and Engelmann spruce trees will be planted to restore areas damaged by recent fires, clean the air, reduce soil erosion, purify waterways, add beauty to the landscape, provide food and habitat for wildlife, and enhance outdoor recreational activities.

Generations Connection

Generations Connection celebrates the legacy, and powerful impact, of Scouting on American families. It teaches Scouts to understand the value of their Scouting family tree and encourages first-generation Scouts to carry this special tradition forward.  Many understand the BSA’s significant role in shaping the character of the youth who participate in Scouting. There is also an important story to tell about the positive impact Scouting  has on the entire family.  For 100 years, Scouting has provided an outlet for families to build a strong foundation in shared activities and values. In many families, the experience of Scouting is so meaningful that a tradition is handed down from generation to generation. Some families who are experiencing Scouting for the first time know it is something so meaningful they will share it again and again as their family grows. If Scouting has made your family better and stronger – you are a Generational Scouting Family and, we’d like you to let us know! The Sam Houston Council is currently gathering information about Scouting families of all kinds– visit the Generations Connection page at www.scouting.org/100years, and click on “Sharing Your Generational Scouting Family Story.”  You can tell your story and print an attractive, personalized BSA 100th Anniversary Generational Scouting Family certificate that you can frame and display.  We are looking for Scouting families who capture the heart of the Scouting movement, and can help to showcase the Generations Connection program, the 100th Anniversary program that celebrates how Scouting strengthens American families. Log in today and tell us your story!  more
