AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMITTEE ON SCOUTINGThe African American Committee on Scouting assists in providing the Scouting program to 16 counties in Southeast Texas, with particular attention to the needs and interests of the African American youth and leaders. A key focus is to grow membership within the African American community and help the Sam Houston Area Council (SHAC) to better reflect the multicultural demographics of the area it serves.
The African American Committee on Scouting was reorganized in February 2011 to include six subcommittees:
Program - To enhance the experience of African American Scouts and retain membership
Leadership - To proactively solicit leaders to support Scouting units and the AASC Finance - To provide financial support for African Americans Scouting in the Sam Houston Area Council
Community Relationships - To build connections with other African American organizations and generate awareness for African American Scouting
Communications - To generate awareness for new programs and initiatives produced by the AASC

On September 27th, the Sam Houston Area Council honored Anthony Chase, President, ChaseSource; Eric Mullins, Co-CEO, Lime Rock Resources; UPS, Gulf South District (Stefan Wilson); and Marion Edwards, Distinguished Scouter. The Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award honors distinguished Scouts and organizations that have put a special emphasis on increasing diversity, inclusion and support with respect to African American youth.
With Honorary Chair J. Downey Bridgwater, Luncheon Chair, Jene Guess-Cash and Sponsorship Chair, Charic M. Daniels, the luncheon drew 261 guests and $60,000 in gross proceeds. A proclamation was given to each honoree by The Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee. The luncheon was produced by the African American Committee on Scouting, chaired by Lionel Jellins. Funds raised will support high adventure camp scholarships for at-risk African American Scouts; merit badge classes in the key areas of budget/finance managment, science/technology/engineering, citizenship and salesmanship; and provide uniforms, equipment, Scout books and camping opportunities. Houston's Butler Stadium was filled with the UNIVERSOUL CIRCUS BIG TOP on August 13, 2012. Scout Troops from W.L.Davis District pitched tents and shared survival skills/information with patrons of the UniverSoul Circus.
From July 9-12, the Committee participated at the NAACP national convention supporting it with Flag colorguard ceremonies and had presence with an Expo booth. The staff received inquiries for joining Scouting and fielded general questions.
