Silver Beaver Award
The Silver Beaver Award is the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow on a volunteer. In 1931, B.S.A. President Mortimer L. Schiff recommended to the National Board that an award be devised for regonition of distinguished service to youth in the area of a local council and the concept of the Silver Beaver recognition was established.
The Sam Houston Area Council has participated in this recognition program since its inception, presenting Silver Beaver Awards in 1931 to W. A. Childress and to E. A. Hudson. Beginning with those first two awards, more than 1500 adult leaders in our Council have been recognized in this manner. In 2008 our Council plans to recognize additional leaders who may be nominated for their service to youth. To view the Sam Houston Area Council Silver Beaver Roll of Honor, click here.
Although presentation is made by the Council, all nominations submitted must be approved by the National Court of Honor before the award can be presented. Only those persons who have been nominated by their Scouting peers are considered by the local council and the award may not be personally applied for. The selection process in our Council involves a Silver Beaver Selection Committee.
Silver Beaver Nomination forms must be received at the Cockrell Scout Center no later than 4:30 PM on May 31st for the nominee to be eligible for consideration in that year.
