VENTURE BIVOUAC

 

The High Adventure Bivouac (“Venture Bivouac”) is designed for venturing crews, varsity teams, and troop venture patrols to have fun, play games, compete against one another, and foster camaraderie among venturers.  The program is designed for venture crews to take the lead in conducting this fun-filled weekend in the Texas Hill Country.  A crew or team can sign-up with Camping Services (713-756-3303) to be the lead crew or team in organizing the weekend of games and competition.

 

Bivouac FAQ’s

 

1.    Where is the Venture Bivouac held? Hamman Scout Camp – Bandera, Texas.

2.    When is the Venture Bivouac? Bivouacs are held three times a year: Fall (October), Winter (January), and Spring (March).

3.    Do we cook our own food? Yes, on containerized fuel stoves (single burner backpacking stove) only.  No ground fires.

4.    Is this activity co-ed? Yes, requires one female advisor for co-ed crews and teams. Not required for all-male crews.

5.    Is water available?  Yes, at base camp and at the bunkhouse from wells accessible by water faucets.  Water drops are available at primitive campsites (typically in 5 gallons jugs per crew). 

6.    Can we bring a water purifier or filter? Yes. It is highly recommended that crews bring water purification systems (Katadyn, MSR) with them.

7.    Do we need tents? Crews and teams must bring their own backpacking tents.

8.    What is a typical schedule for the weekend? Friday PM: Check in before midnight. Get schedule, maps and instructions for Bivouac, set up camp near trailhead. Saturday AM: Fix breakfast. Break camp, backpack to Bivouac area, set up wilderness camp. Hike to Activity Area for games. Saturday PM: Fix Trail supper. Assemble at Campfire area. Each crew will be expected to contribute at least one song, skit, or story for campfire. Sunday AM: Fix trail breakfast. Assemble for awards and Church Service. Break wilderness camp and backpack to base camp.
